Teaching with Stories

By J.P. Myrick

“Tell me a fact and I learn, Tell me the truth and I may believe

But tell me a story and It will live in my heart forever”

Indian proverb

In Africa it is said that a child is not properly educated until they have memorized many stories. It may seem foolish in our modern society but for thousand of years most cultures used storytelling for passing on history, knowledge of life, the importance of moral values, understanding of science and the world. In our society today however it has been relegated to the realm a bedtime stories for kids and basic entertainment. We treat students like computers and believe we can just download information into them to prepare for test. We often fail to address the facts we already know about the human mind, learning styles and it’s function. We fail to inspire them to learn. During a lecture designed and fashioned around storytelling you can introduce key concepts you want students to learn and use vocabulary you want them to learn in the unit you are introducing. Instead of beginning class by saying students today we will be learning about you will be saying once upon a time, or there was once… At the end of the story you will have the students full attention as you point out key concepts they will learn for that day and throughout that particular textbook unit. Storytelling is a powerful learning tool because while it entertains it also serves as an effective mnemonic devices, promote cultural diversity, provide background knowledge, develop positive student moral character and keep student attention throughout every classroom lecture.

“Stories work by embedding their contents into vivid events and images that carry strong emotional coloring,” Professor Kieran Egan

“Storytelling has the unique capability of letting students interact as listeners or as storytellers themselves,” Anne Wallace, Website of Educational Resources

“Everyone remembers stories. People may forget the exact names; they almost always forget dates. But no one forgets the story,” Dr. Susan Easton Black, Brigham Young University
